Artistry in Alignment
Over the past decade, Young-Gyu Choi has established himself as one of the most prominent classical dancers of his generation. Since joining the Dutch National Ballet and being promoted to Principal Dancer in 2016, he has built a remarkably versatile repertoire. He has brought to life the great classical leading roles, such as Basilio in Don Quixote, Solor in La Bayadère, Albrecht in Giselle, and Abd-al-Rahman in Raymonda, while also mastering the dynamic contemporary works of choreographers like Hans van Manen, George Balanchine, and William Forsythe. Recognising his pristine technique and refined artistry, the international dance community has awarded him top honours, including the Gold Medal at the Youth America Grand Prix, First Prize at the Boston International Ballet Competition, and multiple nominations for ‘Dancer of the Year’ by Dance Europe.
Yet, a career at the highest level of dance demands constant evolution. A severe ankle injury in April 2024 became an unexpected turning point. During his recovery, Young-Gyu encountered the Alexander Technique, which fundamentally shifted his understanding of the body. It was no longer just about pushing physical limits, but about finding conscious alignment, longevity, and a deeper connection between mind and movement.
Inspired by this transformation, Young-Gyu officially began his Alexander Technique Teacher Training in February 2025. Today, he integrates his extensive stage experience with these mindful principles. He continues to perform at the highest level while sharing his deep understanding of the body, helping other artists and individuals find the perfect balance between physical excellence and internal awareness.
